Michael Hogan Consulting provides an independent advisory service working for public purpose across the government, community, tertiary and corporate sectors. If you are looking for advice and assistance with strategy, leadership and alliances, I could be your reviewer, collaborator, connector, coach and/or mentor.
I bring expertise, skills and networks built over 30 years of executive experience in the public and community (non-government) sectors in public policy making, organisational leadership, coaching and mentoring, strategy development and facilitation, stakeholder and community engagement, public interest advocacy, innovation and change, issue management, and system stewardship.
My career passion has and will continue to be about enabling People, Places and Partnerships to be the best they can be, through smart public policy, investment, intervention, regulation and partnerships.
I also bring extensive knowledge of policy, program and service design and delivery in the areas of crime and violence prevention, family support, child safety, disability, multicultural affairs, youth affairs, Indigenous affairs, youth justice, women's policy, community engagement, community development, place-based initiatives and citizen and consumer advocacy.
I have held CEO roles in two government agencies - the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women and the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services in Queensland - as well as at the Public Interest Advocacy Centre in NSW. I have been a deputy or assistant CEO in the Qld Department of the Premier and Cabinet, DCCSDS and the Qld Department of Communities.
I was a long-standing member of the national Child and Families Secretaries Group and have been the Qld Government Champion for the Indigenous communities of Hope Vale, Doomadgee and the Torres Straits.
I has also served on statutory bodies - the NSW Community Services Review Council and the NSW Juvenile Justice Advisory Council, and non-government boards - including the NSW Council of Social Services and the Consumers' Health Forum of Australia.
Working as a public interest advocate, I was instrumental in the establishment of the National Children's and Youth Law Centre and the NSW Public Interest Law Clearing House, and supported the establishment of the Consumers' Health Forum of Australia.
As a senior public servant, I have led and facilitated numerous strategic reform agendas in community development, community engagement, social policy, and human and justice services.
I was co-chair of the Organising Committee for the 2005 United Nations / Queensland Government's International Conference on Community Engagement. More recently, I have been closely engaged with strategy and initiatives for the Advancing Queensland Priorities of A Great Start for All Our Children, Keeping Communities Safe and Keeping Queenslanders Healthy.
I am currently co-chairing a governance group for ARACY's Great to Eight research agenda, and support the campaign for a National Child Well-being Strategy.
I have also been appointed an Adjunct Professor to the School of Justice, Faculty of Law, Queensland University of Technology, and I have joined the Faculty of the Alliance for Leadership Learning.
I am passionate about public purpose work - creating public and shared value through effective stewardship, policy and programs, and cross-sectoral partnerships and initiatives.
I am passionate too about 'enabling leadership' - empowering you to enable yourself and others and your organisation or campaign to succeed.
My frame (thanks to Kouzes and Posner; Sinek et al) is that leaders are at their best - create most value - when they:
- model the way: clarifying values and setting an example
- inspire a shared vision: envisioning the destination and enlisting others
- challenge the status quo: questioning relentlessly, showing courage, seeing opportunities, taking risks and facilitating innovation
- enable others: strengthening and growing others, enabling disempowered voices to be heard, adopting a learning/growth mindset, facilitating others action and leadership, and rewarding collaboration, and
- encourage the heart: demonstrating care and respect, recognising contributions and celebrating victories.
This frame and philosophy underpins my approach to coaching, mentoring and connecting.
I am driven by strong commitments to integrity, fairness, inclusion and quality service. I offer a suite of services - reviews, coaching and mentoring, and brokering - that will help you deal effectively with your strategic challenges and opportunities.
I will add value to and help you grow on your journey toward impact and success.
You will leave this position having made a mark - on the way people think, on the sort of human beings that they are, and for so many, on their quality of life. However, its your personal leadership style which will define your time as a DG. Your heart and soul. Your requirement for people to be the best they can be. Your outrage at injustice and inequality. Your excitement at possibilities.
Many thanks for your collegiality and support over our years in our respective Ds-G roles. We've had many complex and interesting challenges across a wide range of matters and I have much appreciated the integrity you have offered along the way!
it has been fantastic working with you over the last few years. I have valued the collaboration and admired all you have achieved.
We present you this ... with appreciation and gratitude, that through your leadership, those of us with a lived experience found an ally. You were an important part of our journey to make our voices heard... You saw our strengths, our courage and our possibility. ... We cannot be heard unless someone in power listens hard enough and starts to open up new pathways of dialogue, understanding, courage and change.
Michael had been preparing me for a role such as this for some time and for that I am eternally grateful.
You are so good at what you do - you have this ability to bring people along on a journey and it seems effortless ... You can make just about anything into an opportunity and on top of that engage and creat partnerships along the way.
Thank you for the opportunities you gave me, your leadership and guidance, your being a wonderful role model, your good humour and calm approach... I am so glad I had the opportunity early in my public service career to work under you.
Thank you for being such an amazing leader and role model. Thank you for your determination to make a positive difference to Queensland families' lives.
